Single over 50 in the North East: what the Census shows

Across Newcastle, Gateshead, North and South Tyneside, Sunderland and County Durham, 662,472 people were aged 50 and over at the 2021 Census. Of those, 270,111 (40.8%) were never married, divorced or widowed, a little above the 39.2% average for England and Wales. Widowhood is more common here than nationally: 13.6% of over-50s were widowed, against 12.8%.

Newcastle itself has the highest share, at 44.0%, and one in six of its over-50s (16.0%) has never married, the highest rate in the area. South Tyneside has the most divorced over-50s proportionally, at 15.7%. County Durham is the most settled part of the area, but because it is so large it still has the biggest number of single over-50s, at 87,048.

Online dating on Tyneside and Wearside

This is one of the easier parts of the country for meeting someone without a car. The Tyne and Wear Metro links Newcastle, Gateshead, the coast at Tynemouth and Whitley Bay, South Shields and Sunderland. A first date can be a short ride for both of you, and nobody has to worry about driving home. County Durham is more spread out, but Durham city is on the main line to Newcastle, which makes it a sensible halfway point for anyone further south.

For Newcastle dating, the city centre and the Quayside work for almost everyone, and there’s plenty to do if the conversation needs a prop.

As for what to talk about, the coast is a reliable opener: most people here have a favourite stretch, from Tynemouth Longsands to Roker. Walking in Northumberland comes up a lot on profiles too. Football matters in this part of the world, so it’s worth knowing which side of the Newcastle–Sunderland divide someone is on before you suggest watching a match together.

First date ideas in Newcastle, Durham and Sunderland

  • Jesmond Dene, Newcastle. A wooded valley in the middle of the city, with waterfalls, a café at the visitor centre and, if you’re lucky, a glimpse of a kingfisher or otter.
  • BALTIC, Gateshead. The contemporary art gallery on the Quayside is free to visit, Wednesday to Sunday, and its upper floors look straight across the Tyne. There’s a café if the art runs out of conversation before you do.
  • The Glasshouse, Gateshead. The concert venue next to BALTIC, formerly Sage Gateshead. A concert gives you something to talk about afterwards on the walk back over the Millennium Bridge.
  • Tynemouth. A walk along Longsands, then the market inside the Victorian station, which runs every Saturday and Sunday.
  • Durham Cathedral and the riverbanks. There’s no admission charge to the cathedral (a donation is asked for), and the paths along the Wear below it make an easy, pretty walk.
  • Roker seafront, Sunderland. A flat promenade walk out towards Roker Pier and its lighthouse, with cafés along the way.

Venues checked November 2026. Opening times and prices change, so check before you go.

Dating safely in the North East

Romance fraudsters don’t care where you live, and the warning signs are the same here as anywhere: strong feelings declared very quickly, reasons never to video call or meet, and before long a request for money. Report Fraud advises that any request for money from someone you’ve only met online should ring an alarm bell. Northumbria Police lists where to get help if you think you’ve been targeted. Our online dating safety advice explains what to do next.
