Single over 50 in Cornwall: what the Census shows

Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly had 269,464 people aged 50 and over at the 2021 Census. Of those, 103,580 (38.4%) were never married, divorced or widowed, close to the 39.2% average for England and Wales.

What stands out is divorce. 15.7% of over-50s in Cornwall are divorced, against 14.4% nationally, while fewer than average have never married (9.9% against 12.0%). In other words, most single over-50s here have been married before. More of them are over 65 (58,166) than aged 50 to 64 (45,414), a bigger tilt towards older ages than in England and Wales as a whole.

Online dating in Cornwall: the long county

Cornwall is long and narrow, and the A30 runs down the middle of it like a spine. Someone in Bude and someone in Penzance both live in Cornwall, but a first date between them is a long drive each way. Truro, the county’s only city, sits roughly in the middle and is the natural place to meet halfway. Bodmin works well for anyone in the north and east.

Every profile shows the member’s nearest town, so it’s worth saying in your own profile how far you’d happily travel. Bear the seasons in mind too. In August the roads and beaches are full of visitors and a coastal car park can be hard to find, so locals often save their favourite places for spring and autumn. A quiet weekday out of season can make for a much better first date.

There’s no shortage of things to talk about. Most people here have a favourite cove or stretch of the coast path, and gardens, sea swimming, gig rowing and surfing all turn up on profiles. Asking someone where they’d take a visitor is an easy opening line.

First date ideas in Cornwall

  • Lemon Street Market, Truro. A covered market in the city centre with independent shops, cafés and a gallery, which makes it an easy, unhurried place for a first coffee.
  • Trelissick, near Truro. A National Trust garden above the River Fal with views over Carrick Roads, and cafés for afterwards.
  • Falmouth waterfront. A walk around the harbour and along the high street, with plenty of places to stop for lunch.
  • The Eden Project, near St Austell. The biomes give you an afternoon of things to look at and talk about, whatever the weather.
  • St Michael’s Mount, Marazion. At low tide you can walk the causeway out to the island together. Check the tide times first.
  • The Camel Trail. The flat path between Wadebridge and Padstow follows the estuary and suits a walk or a gentle bike ride.

Venues checked November 2026. Opening times, prices and tides change, so check before you go.

Dating safely in Cornwall

People in Devon and Cornwall lost £3.1 million to romance fraud in 2025, according to Report Fraud. Scammers often claim to work abroad, on an oil rig or in the military, which gives them a reason never to meet. Before long a problem appears that only money can fix. Report Fraud says any request for money from someone you’ve only met online should ring an alarm bell. Our online dating safety advice explains the warning signs and what to do.
